Things aren’t always what they seem. I’ve always considered Half & Half to be a combination of half cream and half milk. In fact, I sometimes make my own half & half at home by mixing the two together and putting them in my coffee.
About a year ago I was visiting a friend and she asked me if I wanted cream in my coffee. I saw her reach in the fridge for a carton of fat free half & half. I took a picture of the label. It intrigued me.
And a year later I still think about it every time I go to the store for milk or cream. (And since I love to make my own ice cream, I buy a ton of the stuff.)
The makers of Fat Free Half & Half have created a carton that masquerades as half cream and half milk. They have chosen to label their product so you think you are getting something you are not getting.
With. No. Fat. Yeah, right.
The fat is what makes cream cream!
What’s inside the carton does not match what it says on the outside.
Further, when you turn the label around, the ingredients list indicates that there is indeed a trivial amount of fat in one of the ingredients.
So not only is this produce not half milk and not half cream, it is also not fat-free.
It also lists an ingredient called Titanium Dioxide, and then explains that this is “an ingredient not normally found in half and half.”
What gives with this label?
Maybe whoever regulates this sort of thing is just letting them slide.
After all, would you buy a product called Not-Really-Fat-Free Half Pasteurized Skim Milk-Part Titanium Dioxide?
Truthfulness is an important part of yoga. It is the second principle of yama (living ethically) according to the Yoga Sutras. The Sanksrit word is “satya.”
By sharing these thoughts I am not trying to tell you what you need to eat or drink. I’m just posing a few questions for you:
How important is it to you that labels match the reality? How does that affect you personally? Does your body reflect the spirit inside it? Do your actions reflect your true intentions? Do you spend your time in ways that reflect what you truly desire?
Just a few thoughts for you to enjoy with your morning coffee.
