What is a beginning class like?

We practice barefoot on mats. Standing postures are emphasized to bring strength to the legs. The teacher explains every posture in a simple and clear way. You will learn proper body position as well as techniques to encourage relaxation.

What is the difference between Iyengar yoga and other styles of yoga?

Iyengar yoga is very practical. You will develop strength, endurance, flexibility and relaxation by paying close attention to body alignment in each asana. We emphasize standing poses to build strong legs, improve circulation, increase vitality, and improve coordination and balance.

Meditation occurs as the practitioner becomes absorbed in the moment through attention to postural alignment and breath movement. As the mind, body and breath unite, the practitioner moves into a meditative state. The practice leads to self-exploration and one becomes aware of physical tension patterns and psychological resistance. Through regular practice the student’s inner awareness is enhanced and the ability to relax and concentrate is improved.

In Iyengar yoga, candle gazing, incense burning, or music, often associated with yoga, are not used.

Am I too old for yoga?

No one is too old for yoga. Our teachers are trained to meet you where you are. If you have any concerns about starting yoga, contact us ahead of time.

I am embarrassed to join a class because I am so stiff or weak. Do I need to be flexible and strong to come to a yoga class?

Iyengar yoga is for everyone. Your teacher will provide you with instructions that will enable you to work within your range of motion — whether you are dealing with muscles that are tight (or muscles that are too loose.) Gradually flexibility is gained. Strength will be improved over a period of time as students work within their own limitations. Competition is discouraged and students are reminded to remain sensitive to their present state rather than trying to keep up with others.

How do I know what level class is right for me?

Everyone who is new to Evergreen Yoga or the Iyengar method, should start with Introductory or Level 1 classes.

The Intro classes are similar to Level 1 classes, but move at a more gentle pace. If you are a brand-new student and can sit, stand, walk, and get up from the floor easily, you can start at Level 1.

For Level 2 classes, you need to have developed a strong foundation in the Level 1 classes. You will be expected to understand the vocabulary of the Iyengar method. You should also be able to do sirsasana (headstand) and sarvangasana (shoulderstand) in order to participate. (If you cannot practice headstand and shoulderstand due to a physical condition, speak to the teacher; she will give you alternate postures that fit your needs.)

If I have problems with my health, can I practice yoga at Evergreen?

A student who pays attention to the teacher and who practices intelligently will not harm, but will often help, a weakened physical condition. If you have a physical problem or medical condition, please inform your teacher before class begins or call ahead, so that the teacher can give you the proper attention.

Is yoga a religion?

No. Yoga is the process of integrating mind, body and spirit. Everyone can practice yoga, regardless of religious background or belief system.

My schedule is unpredictable. Do I have to sign up for a class series?

You are welcome to attend class on a drop-in basis! You do not have to sign up for a series to attend our yoga classes.

Testimonials

Our Awesome Students

"Not only has yoga connected me to the nuances of my body, I have connected with the nuances of yoga. I am discovering how space is created in the poses and the effect that space has on my well being. It is enlightening to study the kosas (layers of existence) and to convince my ego to 'scoot over' and share space with wisdom. Throughout my journey with breast cancer, my yoga practice strengthened me physically and mentally. My favorite pose...tree pose! Yoga requires intense concentration at being totally present. It has been a delight to have a neighborhood studio within walking distance of my home and business."

~ Diane L.

"What I get from yoga: a good sense of balance, intense stretch, torso lengthening and proactive use of breath. These things really help me to teach, dance and be better & more connected in my body. Sunday yoga at Evergreen serves as my weekly movement meditation."

~ Wayne S.

"My yoga journey began many years ago when I was looking for something more than the typical exercise class. Yoga filled the void and has far exceeded what I imagined or expected. This practice is not only necessary for my physical well being, but for my mental peace as well. Yoga is such a wonderful gift.”
